InterAct –
Intercultural Action Competence Tool

InterAct is a project to promote and validate the development of Intercultural Action Competences (IAC) for participants in international youth projects. It supports the entire duration of international projects - from project design to innovative web tools for practicing and deepening the learning experience, as well as digital group work - to integrate learning into everyday life. To react to the Corona pandemy, InterAct will also include virtual encounters such as virtual volunteering or online work camps.

Februar 2022 in hybrider Form in Groningen (Niederlande) abgehalten.

The Project (English)

Context & Needs: Intercultural Action Competence (IAC) is a key competence necessary for every international youth encounter, contributing significantly to Competence in Cultural Awareness and various other key competences. Despite its central role in youth mobility, IAC was often not sufficiently understood, and the progress in learning this skill was not adequately evaluated and recognized.

InterAct was a highly ambitious project that aimed to develop a complete set of tools organized around a web-based app designed to offer a well-researched and entertaining approach to IAC. IAC involves the ability to navigate complex environments characterized by a growing diversity of people, cultures, and lifestyles. The main goal of InterAct was to transform the concept of IAC from theory into practical use, making it easily understandable for youth workers and participants while also making it enjoyable to work with.

Goals: The project developed a series of output with the aim to:

  1. allow young participants in youth exchanges to dive deeper into the world of interculturality, to monitor, practice and validate their own learning progress,
  2. support youth workers to easily integrate practical exercises, games and reflective elements into the design of international projects, such as Erasmus mobilities and,
  3. raise awareness of decision makers about the need to mainstream IAC, to help promote and support funding of relevant initiatives and mobility projects.

Timeline of Activities: After the official start of the project and the first virtual meetings among the project partners, the first transnational project meeting (TPM) took place in Kiel in September 2021 (Press: Press release on the start of the project). In the months preceding the TPM the focus was on joint work and research on intercultural competences as well as multiple interviews with young people about their expectations, wishes and fears before, during and after their encounters abroad. From this basis, we developed the content and structure of a web app.

Due to Corona restrictions, the second TPM was held in hybrid form from 24-25 February 2022 in Groningen (Netherlands). Besides project management aspects, the test phase of our app prototype (IO1) on intercultural competences was prepared, which we will test and evaluate together with the target group in the next months.

Our TPM on 14.06.2022 was an important milestone for the project partners. The positive feedback on the content of our app prototype showed that we are on the right track and on this basis the next steps for the finalisation of the web app could be defined. In addition, we are working on the first draft of our Handbook (IO2), which is aimed at youth workers and will contain theoretical and practical content on the topic of intercultural competences.

From 06.12.-08.12.2022 the fourth TPM took place in Athens, Greece. Besides administrative tasks, the project partners had the opportunity to see the final version of the InterAct Web App, as well as the IO2 manual for youth workers that was being finalised and translated into all languages at the time. They could also exchange information about the good practices collected and the input received through interviews with relevant stakeholders in preparation of the last project output (IO3), a Policy Paper with the title: “Make competences visible”.

In the following period, the partners researched for existing policy papers dealing with the importance of IAC for the labour market, as well as for methods to promote international mobilities and integrated these inputs into the Policy Paper, which took its final form by the beginning of spring 2023.

Thereafter, a video series was created to explain the basics and functionality of the app, as well as the handbook contents, so that youth workers can use it in their projects, the translation of all IOs into the native languages of the partners was finalized.

In the last months of the project each partner organized a local Multiplier Event with the aim of reaching out to a diverse audience comprising youth workers, decision makers, and members of the media. Each of these events attracted 35 to 65 attendees and served as a platform to not only disseminate the valuable project outcomes (IO1, IO2, IO3), but also to cultivate a vibrant community of InterAct users who could further their understanding of and contribute to the development of Intercultural Action Competence (IAC).

Outputs and Results: The main outcome of the project was the development of a method that allows participants in international mobility programs to assess and measure their gains in intercultural competence. The concrete outputs of the project are freely available in 6 languages (English, German, French, Dutch, Greek and Swedish) below and on the Project’s page in the Erasmus+ Results Platform. The Video-series for Youth Workers is also published on Youtube on the channel or our Swedish partner, Mobilizing Expertise. The Handbook for Youth Workers is also publicly available on Salto-Toolbox.

InterAct - Introduction Video

IO1 - InterACT Web-App

Unveil the unseen: Measuring your intercultural growth

Intercultural communication, and by extension intercultural action competence (IAC) are inherent components of any international youth mobility.  However, this valuable form of learning often occurs implicitly. By breaking IAC down into measurable learning goals across cognitive, behavioral, and attitudinal dimensions, our Web-App makes this essential learning explicit. With this platform, you can take a comprehensive approach to actively monitor, practice, and validate your intercultural learning journey.

IO2 - InterAct Handbook

“Intercultural Encounters - All a Youth Worker needs to InterAct”

Intercultural competence is a key competence that is needed and should be practised for any international youth exchange. It contributes largely to the competence of cultural awareness, but also to many other key competences. to make this process explicit and embedded in a comprehensive learning process, we developed a Handbook with a collection of tools and good practices for the inclusion of intercultural action competence (IAC) in international mobility projects.
