Hello, my name is Emanuel. I am a student at the Commercial Schools in Rheine, and I had the opportunity to complete an internship abroad in Dublin, Ireland. During this time, I worked at Liffey Valley Pharmacy – a modern pharmacy located in a shopping center on the western outskirts of Dublin. It was a great opportunity to get to know the daily work routine in Ireland and to improve my English skills in everyday situations.
My Internship at the Pharmacy
In the pharmacy, my daily tasks included arranging and sorting goods, maintaining the shelves, and interacting with customers. At first, it was unfamiliar to do everything in English – especially because customers spoke with very different accents. However, after a few days, speaking English quickly became a routine and I noticed how much my understanding had improved. I found it particularly interesting to observe the workflow in an Irish pharmacy and to see how friendly and relaxed the interaction with customers is there. I learned a lot – both about medicines and about customer service in an international context.
Life in Dublin
During my stay, I lived with my host mother Miriam and her husband Paul. Together with my classmate Luke we shared the accommodation. They were incredibly kind and made us feel welcome right away. Through them I gained valuable insights into the daily life of an Irish family and was able to use my English outside of work as well.
Leisure and Experiences
In my free time, I explored much of Dublin and its surroundings together with my siblings and friends. One of the most impressive experiences was our trip to the cliffs of Howth, where we hiked along the coast and enjoyed the breathtaking view of the sea. We also visited typical Irish pubs, where we experienced the cheerful atmosphere, live music, and the open nature of the people – a true highlight of our stay!
My Conclusion
The internship abroad in Dublin was a unique and enriching experience for me. I not only gained new professional insights but also learned how to find my way in a foreign country and become more independent. What I liked most was talking to people from different cultures and discovering new perspectives.
At the beginning, it was challenging to communicate in English all day, but that was exactly what helped me progress the most. I would recommend an internship abroad to anyone who wants to experience something new, improve their language skills, and grow beyond themselves.
